Wawaset PArk 1Wawaset Park, located in western Wilmington on was once a horse track, and later a fair grounds and auto park.  DuPont Co. bought the property in 1917 to develop a range of housing types to meet the needs of it’s growing corporate staff.  Wawaset’s design was influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted and features a collection of “Period” houses. Good design features include:

  • Variety of housing styles and types
  • Steep roofs common theme
  • Various façade treatments
  • Narrow streets
  • Tree-lined streets
  • Walking paths
  • Curvilinear streets
  • On street parking
  • Garages in house or back of lot
  • Total acres – 50.48
  • Gross density – 4.0
  • Net density – 5.0

Wawaset was planned community with a strong emphasis on landscape architecture.
