Designing with Density in Delaware – Delaware Example

Lafayette Court

Wilmington, DE

Lafayette Court 1LAFAYETTE COURT. These two historic stone homes at 1803 and 1805 Market Street were built by Joseph Tatnall between 1770 and 1790. It was here that George Washington and General Lafayette planned the Battle of the Brandywine. The two homes now are handicapped accessible with elevators and house 18 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments for the elderly. The adaptive reuse of these buildings not only provide housing for the elderly, but supports the revitalization of the surrounding Brandywine Village neighborhood.

•Excellent adaptive reuse
•Attractive landscaping
•Tree-lined streets
•Historical integrity maintained
•Sidewalks
•Parking behind buildings
•Total acres – .65
•Density – 27 d.u./acre

An excellent example of how density can appear to be much less dense.
